Many leaders I work with consider themselves ‘authentic’, that is they are not ‘faking it’ as a leader. But authentic leadership is always in the eye of the beholder. So the question we need to ask ourselves is not ‘are we authentic?’, but ‘how authentic do others perceive us to be?’

Sometimes we inadvertantly miscommunicate our intentions as leaders, and even contradict ourselves. To counter this, as leaders we can gain greater self-awareness of how others view our behaviors by understanding our behavioral style, as well as our tendency, and that of others, to filter what we hear by understanding our listening style.

Too often we miscommunicate and misinterpret, leading to a gradual erosion of our authenticity as leaders, without us even knowing it. The result is often resistance to our efforts to change the focus and direction of our organizations and teams. And we are left wondering why it came to this point.
